Since its inception in 1988, the NEPA Trauma Center has been a major asset in serving northeastern Pennsylvania. Many people say their lives were saved due to the Trauma Center’s dedicated team of double-board certified surgeons and specially trained support professionals.
Without the Trauma Center, patients would have to travel a much greater distance to be treated after suffering life-threatening injuries. That could literally mean the difference between life and death.
Just ask Deanna Eberle, a high school student who was airlifted to the Trauma Center after suffering extensive injuries in an automobile accident. The fact that she was able to reach the Trauma Center in just a few minutes was critical to her survival and recovery.
"When minutes really mattered, the Trauma Center made all the difference in the world for me,” Deanna says.
Those sentiments are also conveyed by Sabina Ehrenhardt, who also nearly lost her life in a car accident. Thanks to the Trauma Center, Sabina was able to survive what would otherwise have been fatal injuries.
"The Trauma Center literally saved my life,” she says.
Deborah Messett knows firsthand the benefits of having the Trauma Center here in northeastern Pennsylvania.
After suffering multiple serious injuries in an automobile accident, Ms. Messett comments, "I never thought it would happen to me where I would need the services provided by the NEPA Trauma Center. The thought of not having a center in our region is not an option. The excellent and immediate critical care I received for my injuries has given me the opportunity to continue to watch my children grow up.”
The reach of the Trauma Center extends beyond our immediate area. Just ask Al Antonello.
Mr. Antonello, while traveling home from a business trip, suffered serious injuries from an automobile accident and was rushed to the Center.
He states, "Immediate and professional medical assessment, combined with genuine human concern expressed by all individuals who cared for me, was the Trauma Center’s prescription for alleviating my fears and healing my pain. During the entire time I was being treated, the same concern was extended to my family who received continuous information concerning my condition.”
Mari Walker faced a mother’s worst fear when her son was severely injured by an accidental gunshot wound.
She says, ”This is my son, Paul. I never could have imagined that his life could end. When he was accidentally shot, my mother’s prayer was that the right people would be there to save him. I asked her, "why that specific prayer?” She replied that all you hear about are all the "good doctors” leaving the area. Well, right here in Scranton there are some "good doctors”. No… "GREAT” doctors. If the trauma team were not there, my son would have died that day in December. I am told that people with this type of injury do not survive. There were four surgeons and an entire team that were ready for him when minutes mattered, right here in Scranton. He has fully recovered and can’t wait to get his driver’s permit and join the gym. I do believe that God works through these talented people.”
The Trauma Center professionals are here "when minutes matter.”
